"Some species of Falklands penguins have declined in recent years and the activities of man pose ever-growing threats to the marine system. In the Falklands these include offshore fisheries, seismic surveys for oil and its likely extraction, even increased tourism, all potentially detrimental to the indigenous wildlife. It is vital that Falklands Conservation, the only specialist conservation organisation operating in the region, can continue to campaign for appropriate environmental protection, to monitor the effects of potentially harmful activities and to press for such corrective action as may be necessary. With Falklands Conservation looking after their interests, the decrease in penguin populations may be minimised. Without this protection, a catastrophe could occur without warning or a steady decline pass unnoticed. Either could spell disaster for penguins or indeed any of the other coastal and marine wildlife. Penguin Appeal seeks to arise the funds to ensure that Falklands Conservation can carry on its work. I commend it to all those who care about our environment and wish to ensure that it is maintained, as far as it practical and possible, for the shared benefit of all beings living on our planet." |
